David's "Sky"

There hasn't been much of anything going on sky-wise all week, no clouds, no interesting sunrises/sunsets. Clouds moved in today but the boring wispy kind, nothing inspiring. This was a shot I took yesterday to give you at least an idea of how boringly blue it's been all week.

Once, before I foolishly decided to finish my degree, I had free time to go spend falling off of rocks. I often wished I could hang a strong anchor point in the sky to protect sketchy climbs. I even wrote a note in a guidebook that suggests something to the effect of "small cams, a #6 or #7 hex, 30 feet of cord, and a skyhook are required to protect this route".

I found my skyhooks:




They look like bomber anchors, but not exactly portable.

Cory's Sky

This may look like a picture trees, but it is actually a picture of the sky behind the trees. One of the great things I like about living in New Mexico is the great blue skies - I specifically noticed how blue the sky is during my Southwest Adventure trip a few years ago, and I looked forward to making use of it when I decided to move down here. This particular piece of sky comes from a hike up in the mountains that I took this weekend.

When ever there is a partly cloudy day, I like to take pictures of the sky and save them on my computer to use as textures to maybe use on a photo that is taken on more a dreary day.  We had some neat sun sets this week, but I failed to keep the camera in my car.  Boring sky all weekend, when I usually do my shooting.
Then I got this weird idea.  What if I take one of my replacement skies, and put it on the ceiling of an indoor shot?  Even when you combine two outdoor shots, it looks a little fake because the eye and brain can tell the light sources are not in sync.  If you are lucky, it might just look like and HDR effect. I think I'm going to see if I can get the wife to paint the ceiling this way!

I like that if you take a picture of a CFL with a fast shutter speed and a tiny aperture you can see the bits where it is dim and where it isn't. Normally they just look like weird glowing spirals, but like this they have a much more interesting look to them.

As a side note, I suspect it easy to go blind taking pictures of light bulbs.

We stayed at La Posada last weekend during a return trip home from Phoenix. It's a beautifully restored Harvey hotel along the Santa Fe Rail in Winslow, AZ.

There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks...
I decided to take a picture of this plasma lamp in rather "dim" light.  In honor of Dim that is.  I figured the rest of you would be using candles.

Cory's Spaceship

Down in Los Alamos's suburb is Piñon Park, which for some reason is also known as Rocketship Park. Whether this rocket gave the park its second name or the second name lead to the creation of this rocket is a mystery for the ages.

In 1927, the first spaceship found in Nebraska

In 1927, the first spaceship was believed to have landed somewhere near Seward, NE.  Strange scribbles and what appears to be some type of language is etched all around the 75 ft metal beast.  Pioneers of that time wanted it to remain in the town so they propped it up with 4 steel metal brackets.  It is said by some of the locals that sometimes at night an erie glow will be cast from the space shuttle.

This is a photo from near Nelson, NV, about 45 minutes south of Las Vegas. It's a fun place that I was lucky enough to visit again a few weeks ago and will probably return to at some point. So much junk lying around.
