Some parts have a limited lifespan. According to Volkswagen, these plugs should be changed every 40,000 miles. I'm not so sure - they don't look too bad. A bit of regapping and they would have been good for another 10k at least.
Spendy little things, too.

Three of those look much newer than the other three. You must treat half of your engine worse than the other half.
According the the records I have with the car these plugs were installed at 60,000 miles. Sometime soon thereafter a coolant leak occurred that flooded several of the spark plug wells, killing the coils in those holes. A dealer fixed the leak and replaced the coils, but I don't think they replaced the plugs.
I treat all six cylinders exactly the same - pound on them like a drum.
