About a year ago I moved to what may be called "the south", which means that my house no longer has a basement. Instead it has a crawlspace that is full of dirt, spider webs, and pipes. And when you moved to the desert, wasn't that supposed to mean that the drain pipes wouldn't be covered in frost on the first of May?
